One of the adventures we had in Kauai was mountain tubing....."What is mountain tubing?" you ask...well it's were you get on a large inner-tube and float down an old irrigation ditch, that was dug by hand over 100 years ago, through an old sugar cane plantation, hit a few small/very minor rapids and go through about 5 tunnels. Gloves, helmets and head lamps required...
I know, my first thought was "what???" but trust me, it is SO much fun.
The company we went with takes its "adventures" out to the location in these enormous safari looking trucks. We drove for about 10 minutes into the forest; saw where they shot the opening jungle scene in Tropic Thunder, beheaded trees and all; and saw some of the most beautiful views. Once you get to the launch site (ditch), you get some basic instructions on what not to do and then set your tush in a tube and float away. Normally, it is a nice leisurely float, but the day we went was after about a week worth of straight rain and the ditch....she was a movin'....and a little muddier then normal. We finished it in about half the time it normally takes. At the end of the trip, lunch is served and then it's back to company head quarters.Kauai in general is beautiful, and floating through the old plantation, which has sat untouched for so many years was amazing. The natural vegetation and the many different shades of green were breath taking.
